This beer had one of the best labels ever. We talked about it for 5 of the 7 minutes on our video review. Check it out here.

Travis,

Good question. I'm guessing the considerable malt base is what classifies it as a red ale, but as noted earlier Tocobaga is quite hoppy and has an IPA like character. Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster is another red ale that's comparable.

Cheers!

One of my favorites, though, I thought the same thing. Seems to have more of an IPA characteristic. Would you happen to know why they call it a Red Ale opposed to, say, an American IPA?

Travis,

I’m assuming that would be the Blackwater IPA. Look forward to trying it next time it’s on tap at TBBC.

Honestly, I don’t know why Black IPA’s aren’t more popular. Tampa Bay Brewing Co. puts out a seasonal Black IPA as well. Highly recommended.

The party was epic! The beers on there own were fantastic, but the food was amazing! Combine that with the great company and you have a great party. But then again, there hasn't been a Rapp on Tap party that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed! Thanks again Greg & Dawn for having me.

Enjoy reading about all the beers and beer stories this blog reports on. We are in the planning stages for a new brewery in Northeastern USA called Nor'easter Brewing Company LLC and our business plan is to grow to over 25,000BBL within 5 years.
The breweries and stories you report on, allow for much encouragement.

Good review! I also had this latest version of DuClaw Colossus. A friend, who lives in Baltimore, Maryland was able to taste it on draft at one of DuClaw's release parties for Colossus and loved it so much, that he purchased a few bottles for friends and family to take back on his trip when he came to visit. Their brewery rep told my friend that the beer is technically "a Belgian Hybrid" because of the yeast that is used. Either way I was blown away. Amazing how these guys brewed a 21% abv beer, yet hide the alcohol so well. The beer was very complex and interesting, especially as it warmed a bit. I loved it and wish I could get more!

Marsha,

I hate it when a beer I enjoy is not available in my area too!

Fortunately, there are online stores where you can order beers not available for distribution in your neck of the woods. BevMo! out of California sells Sculpin and will ship to most states throughtout the country.

http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=25628

Cheers,

I am from Michigan but recently had this beer while I was in Massachusetts and I cant believe how good it was, usually after one beer or two at the most I dont have a desire for more beer, but his beer makes you want to keep chugging it, it's hard to put the glass down thats how good and thirst quenching it is!
When I got home I called the brewery in San Diego and unfortunately they told me the closest place it is sold to me is in Florida, boo-hoo :-(

Dave,

Black Cannon is quite different from the original Loose Cannon, but still highly recommended. I hope you enjoy it.

It's only about ten minutes from Universal/Islands of Adventure/CityWalk. About 15 minutes from SeaWorld Orlando. And 20 minutes from Walt Disney World. Of course, since most of the travel is along Interstate 4, and this city is a tourism magnet, travel times around rush hours frequently slow to a crawl. (Rush hours 7 to 9 AM and 3 to 6 PM.)

If you don't have a GPS in your car (and why not? It's 2011!), just take I-4 EAST (compass will read North bound) to the Kaley exit. From there you're in an industrial area just off the interstate. Take a left on Atlanta Avenue and bypass the metal recycling place, the meat warehouse, and other industrial businesses (watch out for large trucks). Look for a warehouse with a chain link fence and an American flag. Parking is sometimes a problem, so ask the friendly volunteer bartender if where you've parked is okay.

Come on in an enjoy a pint. Happy hour all day Monday, and 3 to 6 PM everyday.

Joe,

Thanks for the kind words...they're very much appreciated.

Also, have you ever been to a brewpub in Coral Gables called the Yard House? They have 100+ beers on tap, including a decent selection of microbrews. Here's the latest beer menu from their website:

Tremendous list! This one to bookmark for sure, and take my time searching these out. I I live in Miami and we don't have as much beer selection as the beer hotspots (which, ironically, makes me want to try more of the beers out there). Thinks for the exhaustive list and helpful reviews.

Peg's in Gulfport, FL needs to be added to the map as it was just listed as the 5th best microbrewery in America by a national publication. My son called my in St. Pete from NYC to see if I knew about it. Word is spreading on this great little brewery and restaurant. I know the fish tacos are amazing. Thanks and love your blog.

I actually brewed the 5th beer mentioned. I used the Northern Brewer Twisted Enkle Blonde kit which is an extract kit with specialty grains, so it should have been close to a Belgian Blonde with trappist influence but I agree that it is similar to a Saison as well. I'm glad you liked it! :)

Ilya,

I tend to agree with you, although Cigar City actually pulled this one off. The aroma is definitely worth the experience, and the notes blend in nicely in the taste.

I'm not sure about this one...

I haven't tried it yet so my thoughts on it should be taken with a grain of salt, but I'm just not liking the direction of making beers taste like cookies. At what point does it stop being a beer with beery (not a real word) flavor and character?

The aroma I'm willing to be is rather intoxicating though ;)

This whole beer in a Zoo setting seems to be getting pretty popular as of late it seems! I'm seeing it often on many blogs recently. Ranging from zoo's in California to zoo's in Michigan and NY. I think it's actually pretty damn cool!

Those are some fantastic beers on tap! I'll take everything from Southern Tier please and some Sam Adams samples ;)

Totally! (I had one just last night to reconfirm the fact)

If you ever make it out to SoCal you should definitely arrange a visit to the Brewery--the tasting room is great! Very basic/understated (they had a cheese plate set out on an ironing board), and the staff was fantastic--friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming!! :D

Scott,

Ettaler Curator Doppelbock is now available in bottles here in the U.S. I've seen it at Total Wine & More here in Florida, so if you have a specialty beer store in your area, they should have it or be able to order it.

Cheers,

Is this one available in bottles? I'm just getting into some Dopplebocks and am currently enjoying Ayinger's classic Celebrator. Great beer style and I'd love to try others!

Hey Bill-

Good seeing you Saturday - if only briefly.

I'm afraid I tried to personally kill the keg of the Cedar Aged CC Jai Alai to get to Honnapus and...well...the Jai Alai won.

I agree that it was a mess. It was inexcusable to have people working the booths for Southern Tier & Goose Island that had zero knowledge of the beer. Such a great opportunity to educate people on these new breweries to the area and they dropped the ball.

Kel and I actually checked out Mr. Beery's last night after dinner at BrewCo. Mark was a very nice, personable guy and I made sure to tell him you referred us.

We had a few pints when he broke out Russian River's Consecration! I couldn't believe it. It was delicious beyond words. Later on he busted out some Troegs Nugget Nectar which was pretty incredible as well. We had a great time and the costs were far less than World of Beer. We look forward to going back soon!

I'm following them on Twitter now - he told me that whenever he changes out a keg or gets some rares in he'll send a tweet out. They're on there as mrbeerssrq.

@Jennie

Jennie,

The Mellow Mushroom, Brick Stock Pub, and Tap come to mind, as they tend to have large draft selections. This is a seasonal beer, so it tends to float around during this time of year. Please also keep an eye out for beer festivals in your area in which Anheuser-Busch beers are featured. They tend to push this ale as it's one of their best offerings.

Cheers,

Mike,

I hear you! Newcastle has pulled John Courage from the US market for some reason. JC was one of the first imports that I drank, and is my favorite amber ale. I've noted in my blog in an earlier post that they should redistribute it in the US. There's definitely a market for it.

Also, thanks for mentioning the Yard House. I checked out their website, and they definitely have an intense beer selection. There's a couple of their restaurants in the Miami metro area; I'll have to drop in next time I'm down there.

Love the blog, have one question.. I'm a big fan of John Courage Amber however have been unable to find it in the past year. I live in Delaware(use to be able to buy it here) and all the beverage stores tell me they can not get it. Restaurants tell me the same as well. I have turn to the internet but haven't found much and what I have found leads me to
believe that it is no longer in production on at the very least no longer imported to the U.S..... Do you have any info on John Courage Amber?

Also, check out the Yardhouse Restaurant for an intense selection of beers

Flash, thank god for designated drivers! It was great meeting you both.

Anne & I are in Seattle this week, and we also took a sidetrip to Portland. It's beautiful up here in the Pacific Northwest, and it's truly a brewtopia. Not only are there a lot of breweries & beer pubs, but most restaurants here have an excellent microbrew selection as well.

There's a place here in town called the Tap House Grill that has 160 beers on tap. They started IPA Week on Thursday, with 40 from around the world on tap. I was finally able to try the Southern Tier Unearhtly once again, and think that this may be my new favorite IPA. They're several contenders in this area as well. I also agree that the Pumpking Ale is the best pumpkin beer out there.

I'll be updating the blog, in the next week or so, when we return home.

I’ll be updating the blog, in the next week or so, when we return home.

Billy, The Flash Gordon, definitely an "R" rated beer. As far as a pirate would be concerned, RRRRR!! A special thanks to Dawn, my designated driver.
PS, hope you get up to Buffalo one day(Mr. Goodbar on Elmwood) to try a Southern Tier IPA, another favorite of mine, a reliable IPA. Southern Tier also has a Pumpking Ale to die for, I'm not sure how the brew master does it, you can actually taste the crust of the pie, as well as the pumpkin flavor, truly magic! Both rated by I as 5R.
Nice meeting you,
Flash.

Summer Beer Fest: This Weekend!

Summertime, as Janis belted, and the livin' is easy. At least, that's what you'll be thinking to yourself as you swill your third sample of malty, hoppy craft beer goodness at the 12th Annual Summer Beer Festival in Ypsilanti, July 24 and 25.

Gather your friends for a road trip to guzzle (or daintily sip) over 200 beers from more than 30 Michigander breweries. RBB will have seven brews on tap. Some of those nearest and dearest to your hearts. Check 'em out here, as well as more details 'bout the fest.

Discount advance tickets ($5 off) are for sale at the Brain, so save yourself some cash and get thee to the pub!

Summer is halfway over, folks. Don't let the liquid fun dry up before you get to drink it down...

 Outside Seating Update

You've likely passed by the collection of colorful tables and amazing metalwork fencing in front of Salon Saloon. That's our patio, lovely and brilliant thanks to our lovely bartender, Alison, and member Mary, the table artists, and to TJ and Alfred of TJC Design Studio, with the superbly designed fence.

So now that it's there, sitting nice and pretty-like, what's going on with outside seating? Patience, RBB lovahs, as we must be patient ourselves. Approvals are making their way through the system and we will open just as soon as we get the final thumbs up. Think good thoughts...think good thoughts.

(And when we do open, you *must* be served by a server outside--NO BEER is to be taken between the pub and patio by a guest. Members, please help us out with this requirement. Thanks for your understanding.)

And now, in beer news...

Nied Beer has produced a beer of highest quality. It is called The Exception, and it is indeed most excellent. Try this fully loaded (14% ABV) barleywine, named after our Controls Engineer Charlie, a man to whom rules seem not to apply. We've been getting good feedback, so give 'er a whirl. But don't let the picture fool you. This super premium brew is not part of the sampler tray.

And remember that 200/100 milestone we told you about a couple of weeks ago? Well, we now know that our 200th batch will be the Stuck Truck American Oatmeal Stout and our 100th recipe...the Old Ferret Legger, an American version of an English Strong Ale. We'll be crafting something special to celebrate, so stay tuned in the coming weeks.

Good research! I am tasting numerous craft beers up here lately. Mostly from Short's Brewery in Bellaire, Michigan and also from Right Brain Brewery here in Traverse City. Mackinaw Brewing is another craft brewery and restaurant in Traverse City, where I am also a member and I have been in there a couple times. I did also go out to a hop yard, where local agriculture is beginning to grow hops for craft breweries. They had a big pig roast, beer from Right Brain Brewery - an asparagus beer and a maple beer, both very good. We did learn a ton about hops as well - great day all around, although it was quite cool. Later, Steve
